I am Aaron Valdez, a film and video artist originally from Houston, Texas currently living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. My work encompasses both appropriated and original content across multiple platforms and screening environments. I've screened all over the world, my work has toured with RESFEST, LA Freewaves, and the Black Maria Film Festival, and been featured at film festivals such as Seattle International Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival, and AFI Fest.
I started making appropriated videos in college in the late 90's on 3/4" cut-to-cut systems. After school I got into in-camera edited Super 8 and 16mm found footage filmmaking. I began making multiple projector installations and performances with 16mm film loops. I received two early grants that helped me complete the 16mm films Throwing Stones at the Sun and Dissolve. Around 2003 I began making appropriated videos like States of the Union and Big Screen Version. In 2005 I started videoblogging and producing web-based work. Past web-based projects include Blandlands and Valdezatron Industries.
I am currently making tv and internet video mashups videos for Wreck and Salvage with Erik Nelson and Adam Quirk and run the home movie site Lost in Light with Jennifer Proctor.
